Departure from Vienna. We arrive in Bogotá in the evening, transfer to the hotel in the historic centre of the city. Tonight just dinner and rest.
Day 2 Bogota and Monserrate Lookout
Today will be spent mainly in the centre of Bogotá, La Candelaria. Walk through the narrow streets with colonial architecture. A tour of the main Plaza de Bolívar, where street vendors and artists attract us. Did you know that Bogotá has some of the most beautiful street art in the world? We know exactly where to look for the most beautiful paintings. In the afternoon, we take a cable car ride to the Monserrate lookout. Bundle up, we're going to an altitude of more than 3,000 meters. Dinner at our favorite restaurant.
Day 3 Salento
We leave Bogotá and fly to Pereira, then transfer to Salento (approx. 1,5h). Walk through the colourful streets of one of the most beautiful cities of Colombia. The locals take great care, all the doors and windows on the houses are beautifully coloured. The centre is full of souvenir shops, small cafes and restaurants. You're sure to love Salento as much as we do.
Day 4 The tallest palm trees in Cocora valley
Right after breakfast we get on the Willys Jeeps that serve as transport here. In half an hour we are in Cocora valley. Trek through the Cocora valley, the tallest palm trees in the world, beautiful scenery. We are on the edge of the Los Nevados Mountains. In the afternoon, back to Salento. Lunch in a super restaurant - local speciality - trout.
Salento is in Colombia's Zona cafetera, where the best quality coffee is grown. Tour the coffee farm, coffee processing process and tasting. It's not just coffee drinkers who will enjoy the experience.
Day 5 Medellín
Transfer back to Pereira from where we fly on to Medellín. Accommodation in the tourist district of El Poblado. Poblado is very popular among digital nomads, it is one of the safest neighborhoods in Medellín. Evening in the city. We'll taste the best empanadas that people from all over the area come here to eat, then we'll jump in for a drink at our favorite rooftop bar. We'll also have a party in Provenza? After sunset, the whole street comes alive.
Day 6 Comuna 13
A tour of one of Medellín's most interesting neighbourhoods. Comuna 13 used to be the most dangerous place in the world. It was ruled by drug cartels and later by armed guerrillas who smuggled drugs from here. Today, Comuna 13 is a completely different world and a fascinating example of how things can change. There are street performers, dancers, food stalls, souvenir stands and beautiful street art at every turn. We sample Colombian arepas and mango micheladas.
Later, tour the small Pablo Escobar museum and move downtown to the main square. Plaza Botero is dedicated to Colombian artist Fernando Botero, who donated several gigantic sculptures of his work to the city. Keep an eye on things, downtown Medellín is not that safe and the police prefer to leave after sunset.
Day 7 Guatapé
Day trip to Guatapé. The bus journey takes approximately 2 hours. Guatapé is also called the city of a thousand lakes, thanks to the nearby man-made reservoir. Right next to it is La Piedra del Peñol - one of the largest monoliths in the world. We climb the 650 steps to the top and enjoy the beautiful view. Later, transfer to Guatapé, lunch in the streets of the colorful center. It reminds us a bit of Salento. In the evening, back to Medellín. Evening in the city.
Day 8 Medellín - Santa Marta
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Santa Marta. If the weather cooperates, from the plane we will see the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada and Colombia's highest mountain, Pico Cristóbal Colón. Drive along the coast to Tayrona National Park. Today, just relax and enjoy the beautiful views of the surrounding jungle from the hotel.
Day 9 Tayrona National Park
We will spend the next 2 days in Tayrona National Park. Trek through the jungle where the Tayrona indigenous tribes live. We will buy souvenirs from them. Swimming at Colombia's most beautiful beaches and wildlife watching. Will we be able to find a toucan or a sloth? The whole trek takes about 2,5 hours to the last beach of Cabo San Juan. Overnight at the campsite in the park.
Day 10 Tayrona National Park
In the morning we are awakened by the sound of the sea. We enjoy the empty beaches until the day tourists arrive. In the afternoon we leave the park, transfer to the hotel. Today we just rest.
Day 11 Santa Marta - Cartagena
We have a longer transfer (about 6hrs) to Cartagena. We check in and hit the streets of the most beautiful city in South America. Getsemaní was once Cartagena's most dangerous neighborhood. Today it is different. Colourful streets, cafes, streetfood and Latin music blasting from bars right on the street. Plaza de la Trinidad fills up as the sun sets and street dancers have their prime here. For dinner tonight we'll have streetfood and a real piñacolada made with fresh pineapple.
Day 12 Cartagena
Beyond the walls of Cartagena is a completely different world to what we experienced yesterday. Downtown is where the rich once lived. Colourful colonial buildings, expensive boutiques, restaurants and rooftop bars. Palenqueras walk the streets in colorful dresses, asking for tourists' attention. Cartagena is now the most touristy city in Colombia. We take a tour of the city centre, talk about the local life and walk along the ramparts overlooking the modern Bocagrande district. Later, we'll enjoy the sunset from the nearby San Felipe Fortress. On our last night in the city, we'll say goodbye to Colombia the way it should be said, at one of the best cocktail bars in the world.
