Departure from Vienna to Ethiopia.

Today, we’re in for one of the most unique experiences of the trip – the Abune Yemata Guh church. It’s a place unlike any other in the world. While it may not be as architecturally grand as other churches in the region, its location on a sheer cliff face is absolutely breathtaking. The climb to the top is challenging, but the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains from the edge of the cliff make it all worth it. Later, we’ll visit the Maryam Papaseit church, one of the most accessible churches in the region, before heading back to Mekele.

After breakfast, we set off on a 3-day expedition to Danakil, one of the most extreme places on Earth, located in the Ethiopian desert. The landscape here is both terrifying and captivating, with nature creating awe-inspiring geological wonders. From endless salt plains to volcanic terrain with an erupting volcano, colorful sulfur lakes, and bubbling springs – it’s a true adventure! We arrive in Danakil by afternoon and head straight to the salt lake Assale, located more than 100 meters below sea level, surrounded by endless salt flats. We’ll enjoy a stunning sunset before heading to our camp for the night – under the open sky.

Today’s adventure begins with a drive to Dallol, one of the hottest places on Earth. It’s a surreal landscape that feels like it’s from another planet – with incredible formations, vibrant thermal pools, and sulfur springs. Chemical reactions unfold before our eyes, creating a dazzling display of bright yellows, oranges, and greens. This geothermal wonder is unlike anything you’ll see anywhere else in the world. On our way back to camp, we’ll take a refreshing dip in small salt lakes in the heart of the desert.
In the afternoon, we’ll make our way to the active Erta Ale volcano, where we’ll spend the night. A short trek to the volcano’s summit awaits, and after sunset, we’ll witness the mesmerizing sight of bubbling lava in the crater. This is an experience you’ll never forget. Tonight, we’ll sleep under the starry sky.

We’re in for a stunning sunrise over the volcanic landscape. Afterward, we’ll head to the salt lake of Afdera. This area is the main hub for salt mining and distribution across Ethiopia. In the afternoon, we’ll take a flight back to Addis Ababa. To wrap up our adventure, we’ll enjoy a delicious dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant.

In the morning, we fly to Jinka in southern Ethiopia. We’ll meet our drivers and head to the Omo Valley. This region is home to several indigenous tribes, and you’re in for some truly unique experiences. Our first stop is the village of the Mursi tribe, known as one of the most fascinating tribes in the world. The women of the tribe are especially famous for wearing large lip plates. We’ll explore the village, and our local guide will share fascinating insights into the Mursi way of life. Later, we’ll visit the village of the Bana tribe, where the boys will show us their impressive stilt walking skills – they are incredibly talented! Finally, we’ll head to our lodge, where we’ll spend the night.

In the morning, we visit the village of Korcho, home to the unique Karo tribe. From the village, we have a stunning view of the majestic Omo River, the main water source for the Omo Valley. The Karo are renowned as masters of body painting, and we’re invited to witness their morning ritual, where the women paint intricate designs on their skin. Later, we meet the Nyangatom tribe, descendants of the South Sudanese Toposa people. The women wear large beaded necklaces, adding more throughout their lives – an essential part of their culture.
In the afternoon, we visit the village of the fascinating Hamar tribe. The Hamar women stand out with their distinctive hairstyles, which they color using a special mixture of clay, butter, and incense. We’ll sit down to enjoy a traditional coffee ceremony while taking in the beauty of an African sunset. Afterward, we return to our lodge, where we can reflect on all the incredible experiences of the day.

In the morning, we continue our journey to Konso. On the way, we stop by the Arbore tribe. The women of this tribe have very dark skin and striking facial features. Unmarried girls shave their heads and wear colorful necklaces. As we walk through the village, we’re the biggest attraction for the children.
We then proceed to the Konso region, passing through hilly landscapes adorned with vast terraced fields. The Konso tribe is unique for their exceptional agricultural skills, and their terraced fields and fortified villages are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. We’ll explore the village of Gamole, before heading to our hotel for the evening.

After breakfast, we head to the highland region of Gugi and visit one of the famous Gamo warrior villages. The Dorze tribe is renowned for their weaving skills, creating beautiful fabrics. The houses in the Dorze village are unique, resembling elephant heads. We’ll have the chance to taste a local specialty – bread made from false banana, along with traditional grappa. As the evening falls, we gather around the fire with the Dorze family, sharing stories and enjoying the warmth of their hospitality.

Chamo je domovom stoviek hrochov, ktoré sa v noci chodia pásť na trávnaté brehy. Jazero je tiež útočiskom pre niekoľko tisíc nílskych krokodílov. Neskôr presun na letisko a odlet do Addis Ababa. Večer odlet do Viedne.
